Three nights a week, you can find North Charleston High School Principal Henry Darby hard at work at his local Walmart Supercenter. The South Carolina school administrator and county councilman has another job working from 10pm to 7am stocking shelves and he gets off with just enough time to get to campus before the morning bell. But Darby didn’t take the side gig for himself, he’s doing it to help low-income students at his school and their families.
The principal says the kids really need help and part of the reason he works so hard to help them is because of people who helped him growing up. After his parents died when he was a kid, his church family and other relatives stepped up for him. “I can say that people really helped me to get to where I am today,” Darby explains.
And when the Charleston community heard about what the principal was doing, they started a GoFundMe campaign to add to his efforts. The goal was to raise $20-thousand by the end of January, but in just a few days, donors have given over $48-thousand and money is still coming in.
