The pandemic has been especially hard on small business owners, but it didn’t stop Renatta Frazier from helping those in need in her community. She’s the owner of Great House BBQ in Springfield, Illinois, and when schools closed for COVID last year, she provided free hot lunches to neighborhood kids. Now her act of kindness is being returned because her community is pitching in to help keep her doors open.
Dusty Rhodes, a customer and friend, started a GoFundMe campaign for Great House BBQ and hundreds of donors have contributed. She says everyone she’s ever taken to eat there “had had a religious experience” and she didn’t want to see them go out of business. The fundraiser has brought in more than $5-thousand so far, which has allowed Frazier to pay off back rent she owed and avoid eviction.
Frazier is hopeful for the future and grateful for the “wonderful, amazing, generous people” who have shown their support for her restaurant.
