When Lee Borgia and her husband, Chuck, were forced to evacuate their home in Gates, Oregon, because of the wildfires, they planned to sleep in their van. It was going to be a tight fit for the couple, their two birds and their black lab, but they drove to the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem to stay because they had nowhere else to go.
It was cramped, but they slept there for several nights until a Salem couple approached Red Cross volunteers at a resource center and asked if anyone would be able to use their RV. Lisa and JoeWaldner wanted to help people who were in need and they were connected with the Borgias. Now they’ve moved into the Waldner’s trailer and the strangers have become friends, Joe even comes by to add gas to the generator and do a check-in with them every 12 hours.
Lee calls her benefactors “the couple from heaven” and she and Chuck are so grateful for their generosity. The Waldners say they’re just happy they could help them out and Lisa adds, “We keep telling them we’ve adopted them.”
