Mom Raises Money For Diverse & Multicultural Library Books

An Illinois mother of three is raising money to purchase more diverse and multicultural books for school libraries in her area. Amanda Carter started a Facebook fundraiser called “Fill Our Schools with Diverse Books,” and she has already raised over $5-thousand for her cause.

"In our house, we've always tried to have diverse books," Carter says. "Just as important as I think it is for my kids, and kids of all races, black and biracial kids, to see books that resemble them, I think it’s equally important for white kids to see that too."

She believes that more diverse and multicultural books in their community’s libraries will help spread a powerful message. "Hopefully with a lot of these books, we're promoting that activism piece, that social justice and that diversity," Carter says. "So as (our kids) grow older, they'll use their voices and say something."

The campaign has already received enough in donations to buy more than 300 books.
