#GoodNews: Planes Drop Veggies For Stranded Animals In Australia

As wildfires continue to burn through Australia, animals affected by the flames are getting some food from above. “Operation Rock Wallaby,” commissioned by the government of New South Wales, is using helicopters and planes to drop thousands of pounds of carrots and sweet potatoes to endangered animals on the ground.

The critters’ natural habitats are being destroyed by the raging fires and they’re in danger of starving to death. Environment minister Matt Kean explains, “The wallabies typically survive the fire itself, but are then left stranded with limited natural food as the fire takes out the vegetation around their rocky habitat.”

Rock wallabies are one of the endangered species under threat by the wildfires and Kean says they hope the supplementary food will help their survival and recovery.
